Hot Off the Press: SPICE’s Latest January 2019 Update

Early in 2018, SPICE was thrilled to be awarded a significant project working under Energy Efficiency Alberta. With the guidance of the Alberta Government and through the Community Energy Capacity Building (CECB) Program which helped us complete our energy cooperative start-up.

The Government of Alberta in consultation with SPICE and others is additionally shaping legislative changes (Small Scale Generation and Community Generation specifically), that will allow community solar to realize its full potential and diversify our economies.

See the recent announcement made by the Government of Alberta on future Community Generation programming here.

Additionally, the Government of Alberta is establishing a new opportunity for investors called the Community Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) Tax Credit. This is another newly developed legislation ( from the Investing in a Diversified Alberta Economy Act) which will allow SPICE and other ODC cooperatives (Opportunity Development Cooperatives) and social funds alike, offering social impact initiatives, to offer a 30% tax credit for investors. SPICE is incorporated as an Opportunity Development Cooperative (ODC) and we are diligently working on all the necessary processes and development of community investment products to ensure our ODC successfully offers investors the opportunity to take full advantage of this tax credit.
